GOAL: Feed 2000+ people Thanksgiving Dinner!
The mission of the Ascension Meal Ministry is to provide a hot meal to the needy in the Oakland area. We welcome all Ascension parishioners to support this ministry by either donating food items, making a monetary donation, prepare and cook the meal or to help deliver meals.
This Thanksgiving Day November 21 – 22 we will prepare meals for the homeless in Oakland and surrounding areas. We will also prepare meals for needy organization in the Bay Area (last year we prepared meals for Covenant House, Anka Behavioral Health, Fred Finch Youth and others). Last year we served over 1,200 people.
We distributed meals to homeless shelters and transitional housing for the homeless, needy families, and to the hundreds of homeless living on our streets in Oakland and Berkeley. We are also investigating if we can help the Camp Fire.
This year we want to do the same and expand our efforts. We especially want to help any of our own parishioners who may need a Thanksgiving meal delivered to their homes.
Currently, we have a need for the following:
- Pies (apple or pumpkin); these may be delivered beginning the weekend before thanksgiving)
- Bottled water (may be delivered at anytime)
- Monetary Donations (with the donations, we will purchase the vegetables, potatoes, dressing , etc. and the plates, napkins and utensils— environmentally friendly)
On Wednesday evening November 21 beginning at 6:00pm we will prepare the pies, organize serving lines etc.
On Thanksgiving morning, November 22, Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 8:30am. After Liturgy, at 9:30am, we will begin to assemble the meals for distribution.
If you would like to help deliver the meals, please be at church by 10:30am.
