Pastoral Greeting and Ministry Updates

Pastoral Greeting and Ministry Updates
Beloved Parishioners of the Ascension Cathedral:

I pray you are well. As many of you know we have been live streaming our services for the past week because of the dedication, hard work and commitment of several of our fellow parishioners. Yanni Limnios was tasked by the Parish Council to install cameras in the cathedral to stream our services. He was quickly contacted by Steve Angelides and together they took the lead on this most important project. In about a week (and many hours), a new wifi network, cameras, a sound system and upgraded internet were installed. Assisting Steve and Yanni were Costa Kagarakis (who found and installed the cameras), George Banis, Paul Fakaros and our staff Jesus Reza and Juan Soriano. You can watch all the divine services live-streamed from our Ascension website, Facebook Live, and YouTube (see below for the links).

This is a wonderful example of stewardship! People taking their talents time and treasures and utilizing them for the church—and we are thankful. In addition, our thanks to the Golf Committee who has donated $5,000.00 to help cover the cost of the equipment. This entire project was covered by donations, both monetary and man-hours, we are truly thankful.

You can pray along with our services on our Church Website: www.ascensioncathedral.com

As we reach the last Sunday of Great Lent (next week is Palm Sunday), the Gospel lesson again foretells of our Lord’s Passion It is now the third time in Mark’s gospel that Jesus prepares His disciples: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him, and after three days he will rise.”

The night of our Lord’s voluntary arrest is near. We know the situation well: one disciple betrays our Lord, one denies Him three times, the others run off and hide. Only the youngest, John, stands at the foot of the cross with the dedicated woman to witness the end.

The men who had been the closest to Christ faltered. They had seen His miracles and experienced His Power. They heard Him proclaim the Good News. And they had Jesus explain the meaning of His Gospel. They were frightened and confused. However, the resurrection reignited their faith and they placed their total trust in Christ. So much so that when Thomas sees the risen Lord proclaims: “My Lord and my God!”

The Myrrh-bearing women are examples to us all! They do not falter and overcome their fear. They are led by their faith in their Lord Jesus Christ. Despite all obstacles—spiritual and physical— they are at the Cross and the Tomb. Their courage and love of Christ is a humble lesson to all.

As we near the end of Great Lent continue your commitment to Christ. We are in a unique situation this year, with perhaps more time to focus on the inner life. Please utilize this time to your spiritual growth.  May you better understand His mission and gospel. Offer your prayer knowing that Christ went to his voluntary Passion for us and our salvation. Be courageous and experience His love. Know that Christ is our Lord and God!

In His love,

Fr. Tom

Sermon on St. Mary of Egypt
As we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Lent, which is dedicated to St. Mary of Egypt, take a moment to reflect on her life and example with this beautiful talk on “The Beauty of Repentance” which was offered by Christine Gindi, MDiv, MA. Christine is an Orthodox Christian, psychotherapist in training and diversity facilitator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her talk was given on April 29, 2017 at Ascension Cathedral during our Lenten speaker series.  Christine offers a reflection on St. Mary of Egypt’s journey of repentance in the Jordan Desert through an emphasis on the Life-Giving cross and Divine Mysteries of Jesus Christ.

Please continue to donate and support the ministry of your Cathedral. To offer your stewardship, please contact Cathy Giouzelis via email or call the Church Office at 510-531-3400.
