Growing In Faith

From the desk of Sunday School Director, Renee Taylor.

Christos Anesti! Christ is Risen!

As Sunday School winds down for the summer months, I am amazed at how quickly the year went by. I know, I say that every year – but this year was truly supersonic!

I am so proud of all our students and how committed they are about learning and growing in the Faith. It’s such an honor to be one of many teachers in their lives – parents, godparents, grandparents, etc. They are simply wonderful children who will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m sure all of my fellow teachers feel the same way.

In April, we prepared for and learned about Great Lent and Holy Week. Students demonstrated their learnings with the Holy Week Experience – an interactive walk through the days of Holy Week in the Cathedral, and by putting their faith in action with our Mission Coin Box
drive and serving the church as Myrrh Bearing Women and Altar Boys.

We will celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of our students on Sunday, May 15th, with our Sunday School Graduation Ceremony and end of year party
in the Richmond Room, immediately following Holy Communion. Sunday School will then be on recess until Sunday, September 18th.

To everything, there is a season, and the coming months will be all about rebuilding the Sunday School faculty for the fall. Several of our beloved teachers are retiring after many years of faithful service. The talents of Veronica Ruby, Marie Banis and Niki Boukis have been integral to our program. I have relied on all three to help make learning experiential and fun for all of our children. These ladies are very special and inspirational teachers who will be missed by all. In addition, I will be stepping down as Sunday School Director at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. I know I speak for all of our teachers when I say that serving our students is one of our most fulfilling life experiences and truly a labor of love, but now it’s time for another leader to take the helm and continue steering our students on their journey to growing in Christ.

Sunday School Parents and Friends: It’s now the eleventh hour and YOUR turn to step up and get involved. Be part of this small but mighty team that holds one of God’s most important commandments dear – the raising up of our children in the ways of the Lord. Remember Ascension Sunday School in your prayers, search your heart to see if leading this critical ministry, or teaching one of our vacant classes, is what God is calling you to do. Drop me a note at if you have any questions or for more information
